■ ポリオ根絶指導者のためのロータリー栄誉に、バボコートジボワール大統領

　 7月24日、ＲＩは、世界中のポリオ根絶に貢献したことを記念して、 Polio Eradication Champion Awardをローラン・バボ・コートジボワール大統領に贈ることを承認しました。

　バボ大統領の指導のもと、2005年以降、西アフリカにおいてのポリオの発症はありません。
コートジボワールの内戦にも関わらず、彼は、大規模なポリオ免疫化キャンペーンを促進し、このことを最重要の政治的支援課題としました。
さらに彼は、個人として３万６千ＵＳドルをこのキャンペーンに寄付しました。

　ルイス・ジアイ元ＲＩ会長は、首都アビジャンでこの賞を彼に贈りました。
「世界中のロータリアン120万人を代表して、この賞をバボ大統領に贈ることができるのはとても光栄です」と語りました。
「ポリオ根絶への彼の個人的な貢献は、この病気撲滅と戦っている人々への激励です。」

　この賞の受賞者には、マレーシアのアブドラ・バダウィ首相、トニー・ブレア前英国首相、小泉純一郎前日本国首相、コフィ・アナン元国連事務総長などがいます。

Rotary honors Cote d'Ivoire president for polio eradication leadership

On 24 July, Rotary International recognized Cote d'Ivoire President Laurent Gbagbo with its Polio Eradication Champion Award in honor of his commitment to eradicating polio worldwide.

Under Gbagbo's leadership, the West African country has been free from polio since 2005.
Despite civil war in Cote d'Ivoire, Gbagbo facilitated mass polio immunization campaigns, giving the occasions the highest level of political support.
In addition, he made a personal contribution of US$36,000 to the cause.

Past RI President Luis Giay presented the award in Abidjan, the country's capital.
"On behalf of Rotary’s 1.2 million members worldwide, I am honored to present this award to President Laurent Gbagbo," said Giay.
"His personal commitment to polio eradication is an inspiration to those who are fighting the last of this disease."

Other leaders who have been honored with the award include Malaysian Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi, former British Prime Minister Tony Blair, former Japanese Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi, and former UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan.
